To keep or remove the column? That was the question I was asked when I first met this client. Structural work can be daunting and can also add significantly to costs. This kitchen had a large centrally placed column separating the kitchen and dining space. In this case, I didn’t think removing the column would add anything to enhance the space. In fact, we ended up making the column a little bigger and turned it into a pretty and practical feature by adding a glazed display unit and worktop section to it. It’s always exciting to design a space that presents a few interesting challenges and this was no exception. After a few design iterations, we agreed to turn this kitchen into an ultra-glossy modern beauty that would flow into the dining room by incorporating matching kitchen units with open shelving and wall cladding in the same quartz finish as the worktop. It’s a fabulous finish which perfect suits this space. The final open plan room is wonderful with masses of storage, light and has a great flow.
