Another shot of the gorgeous and recently completed East Finchley kitchen. I hadn’t designed a modern one for a while as the last few had all been traditional, but now I have a whole bunch of modern ones on the go! This is such a spacious and nicely planned extension. The love for a blue painted shaker kitchen shows no sign of abating. We painted the chimney breast in the same shade of blue to match and lined the cavity with patchwork tiles to match the backsplash in the kitchen. *Wall units vs Windows*

This was a tricky space to work with. My client had this fabulous extension planned but was unsure about where to place the windows to maximise light and keep everything symmetrical. Having all the windows would mean no wall units, so we needed to also consider where to place those essential cups and glasses without them clunking around in drawers.

Step forward the bi-folding dresser unit which sits directly on the worktop and which is the perfect unit imho as it has a multitude of functions. You can use appliances inside it, it can house household items, it can serve as a pantry.

We spent a lot of time working on this design and a lot of consideration went into the position of all the windows. My very happy client sent me this snap of her finished kitchen. Everything is symmetrical. The lack of wall units hasn’t resulted in a compromise on storage. The windows are perfectly placed and a beautiful feature of the space.

Chimney breast conundrum! We see lots of kitchens

Chimney breast conundrum!

We see lots of kitchens where the chimney breasts need to stay in the room. Many times they aren't workable, so what do you do with them? I see lots of architects plans where they hide the chimney breast behind tall cupboards but I like to make a feature of them.

In our latest Finchley kitchen, my all things country loving client was very keen to keep her chimney breast and surround. She loved our idea to paint the surround and line her chimney breast with patchwork tiles which we also used for the kitchen backsplash (more photos coming soon).

Does anyone else have any creative ideas for kitchen chimney breasts? Would love to hear them and maybe steal them for next time...

It wasn't the most pleasant of surprises when my clients builder knocked down the wall between her old kitchen and dining room only to discover an unidentified steel beam holding up the house. Probably not the finest days work from her structural engineer, but we adapted and overcame.

As it couldn't be removed without sending the cost of the project well over budget, we reworked all of the designs we had previously done to find a way to incorporate her steel that wouldn't compromise anything my client wanted in her dream kitchen and for it still to look fabulous!
